Vocabulary development forms an integral component of STEM-based teaching. However, vocabulary development must extend beyond the mere defining of words to incorporate strategies and techniques that help promote new words into students' active vocabularies. By observing STEM-related classes, Sapphire can indicate if teaching strategies support sufficient vocabulary development.

Based on classroom observations of STEM-related classes, most vocabulary development here (21% of all observed sessions) centered on the defining of concept (C) words (i.e., words defining the main ideas associated with a particular lesson). Other than defining words and asking students to listen to the pronunciation of words, teachers rarely employed language strategies.
